Anne Davies Anne was brought up in the Derbyshire Peak District and studied Fine Art at Newcastle before moving to London. She has exhibited widely and her work has appeared at group shows and art fairs in New York and the UK, with solo shows in Newcastle and London. Anne’s pictures seldom record a specific place, though much of her work is inspired by Cornwall and seeks to capture the sea air and coastal light of the area. More recently both the countryside of the South East of England and the scenery of her Derbyshire childhood have been an influence. The over riding feeling is that of a peaceful place; fields, harbours and empty stretches of land are edged by rows of houses and small settlements. Colour is an important element – fine layers of acrylic are built up and stripped away creating delicate colour passages and textures reminiscent of stone and ceramic. In spite of their allusions to such scenes there is a strong abstract element to the work. They may begin as depictions of village squares, harbours towns etc. but during the painting process they take on a life of their own, houses and shapes are painted over but the imprint remains visible, creating an archaeology beneath the painted surface.
