Jane O'Malley
Painter & Printmaker

Born in Montreal, Quebec, Jane O’Malley
travelled widely, eventually living and working as a painter in St Ives from 1969 – 1990. In 1973 she married the renowned Irish painter Tony O’Malley.

They painted extensively in Cornwall, the
Bahamas, Lanzarote, Ireland and the Isles of Scilly, before going to live permanently in Ireland in 1990.

Jane’s fascination with line, shape and colour is reflected in the still-lives, flowers and landscapes that she paints with such sure instinct. Every mark is considered, every brushstroke and line is relevant; her intuitive ability to use tone and colour is wonderfully fused.

Her paintings range from the domestic to
the outside world, in compositions made
with an incisive line and an elegant and
sophisticated sense of form.

Going through the work in her studio
together, we found a group of early paintings from Cornwall - soft and atmospheric; bold colourful work from Lanzarote; more painterly work from Ireland, often commemorating a significant place or event.

Together they span thirty years of painting – a visual diary of one of Ireland’s leading
women painters, brought together for this
her first solo exhibition at The Stour Gallery.

Jane painted and showed her work
extensively in the United Kingdom
until 1990 when she moved permanently to live and work in Ireland. Whilst in the U.K. she was a member of both Newlyn and Penwith Societies of Artists.

Since then her work has been shown in major galleries throughout Ireland. Recent Exhibitions include a solo show with Taylor Galleries, Dublin (2006) who represent both Jane and Tony O’Malley.
