Jane Perryman
Ceramicist
For many years my work has investigated the vessel through traditional techniques of handbuilding, burnishing and smoke firing. My use of the ‘naked clay’ surface without the addition of glaze enables the work to absorb smoke in the black fired pieces or light in the white work. Recently I have developed ideas which retain the essence of timeless vessel forms as well as referencing contemporary urban structures such as buildings, walls and bridges. This sculptural work explores the ambiguity of internal space between its double walls as well as tension and balance where two forms are placed together. The composite pieces invite interaction through repositioning into new arrangements and compositions. My work has won awards at the Fletcher Challenge in New Zealand and the World Ceramics Biennale in Korea and is in both public and private collections world wide.
I combine studio work with writing; Smoke Fired Pottery (1995), Traditional Pottery of India (2000) and Naked Clay (2004)have all been published by A&C Black. My new book Smoke Firing will be published in autumn 2007 by A& C Black.
Techniques
Pieces are handbuilt using slabbing, press moulding & coiling processes. The surface is burnished & bisque fired to 840 centigrade, then sanded and re-fired to 1050centigrade. Clay is a mixture of Porcelain & Stoneware – sometimes mixed with organic material which fires out to give a pitted surface - to be later inlaid with a mixture of lime and oxide. This is followed by smoke firing in a saggar with various resists and combustibles.
