PAST EXHIBITIONS

Spring Exhibition 2012

Jessica Cooper RWA Life Without Words - New Paintings
There will be approximately 40 paintings in the exhibition

10 March – 21 April 2012

Jessica Cooper’s paintings have a clarity of observation and mark making that create their own ambiguity. Forming connections, emotions evolving and revolving, the paintings are caught in time, place and circumstance. Her subjects are the familiar that anchor her in her life; isolated on canvas, we reappraise and interpret them through our own daily lives. We feel we know them, as indeed we do; they are part of the shared human experience. A sense of place, a sense of self, and a sense of the pathos of the house, the tree, the cup, flower or fruit, are the communicating elements of Jessica Cooper’s work; that these objects and landscapes cannot know the emotional response they trigger in us; the moment caught and held by the paintbrush and pencil; and underpinning and supporting, the emotional communication, a strongly intuitive but academic understanding of area, colour, form and tone. In many ways visual poetry of the sparest and most affecting kind.
Sarah Stoten

The exhibition will include a collection of ceramics by leading Danish potters:
Courtesy of Anita Besson - Galerie Besson Anne FlØche • Priscilla Mouritzen • Hans VangsØ

Stoneware and Porcelain vessels by three leading Danish potters: Anne Fløche's stoneware is freely expressive, with a bold and broad definition of form, depth and texture of glaze and an economic brush. Her crawling pigments and lyrically abstracted motifs enrich the poetic charge of her pots and reveal a sensitive, gently humorous eye for the shapes and characters of the natural world.
Hans Vangsø studied at the Jutland Academy of Fine Arts in Demark. He makes bold woodfired pots, often square vases and large jars. He has exhibited widely in Denmark and Europe, and in 2002 was one of the artists selected for the major touring exhibition From the Kilns of Denmark which travelled to New York, Berlin & Paris.
Priscilla Mouritzen: South African born; Priscilla had a studio in England before moving to Denmark where she has lived and worked since. She makes delicate pinched porcelain bowls with engobe glazes, patterned, textured and woodfired. She has exhibited widely in Europe and is a board member of the Guldagergaard Ceramic Centre, Skælskør and the World Crafts Council Europe

Retrospective Exhibition 2012

Hazel Johnston - Retrospective Exhibition in association with the Johnston family

18 February – 3 March

A selection of the work will be for sale together with a beautifully illustrated publication ‘Hazel Johnston – Porcelain’

The ceramics will be shown with paintings by Julie Colins
It is the sense of calm, the colour and placement of vessels in the paintings, which led to inviting Julie Collins to exhibit her work with Hazel Johnston’s ceramics. The departure from form to the exploration of pattern, space and colour in her paintings, share so much with Hazel’s work; ceramics and paintings coming together in harmony and contrast.

Mark Raggett ARWS

Welsh-born Mark Raggett RWS started to paint natural surroundings whilst at school, where he was encouraged by his art teacher, Ron Lowe. Another strong influence and help at the time was the painter Graham Sutherland who was still visiting Pembrokeshire to paint during the 1970’s. He studied Fine Art at Reading University between 1972 and 1976 and went on to teach at Wellington College for a year. He moved to London and started working in theatre and opera as a scenic artist and then onto Thames Television as a designer where he stayed for five years before going freelance.

Since then he has continued to paint, draw and experiment with different media whilst also turning his creative talents to film and television as an art director.
