David Hawthorne

David Hawthorne studied fine art at Berkshire College of Art and University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, graduating in 1973, and taught for several years as head of art. Following a career in education which culminated in becoming a director of education and head of children's services in a local authority, he returned to full-time painting in 2009.

David's paintings are impressions of outdoor scenes. He uses colour and tone to evoke the atmosphere associated with a particular place, time of day and weather conditions. The landscapes range from coastal scenes to rural settings, and water is a common theme in many of the paintings. Many of David's cityscapes are night paintings, capturing the life of the city as darkness falls.

The paintings are representational but often have an abstract quality about them, without an undue emphasis on figurative detail. Buildings, objects and people are often hinted at rather than clearly delineated and the paintings invite the viewer to bring their own experiences and memories to how they interpret them.

Recently, David’s paintings have taken on a more abstract quality, using glazes to create a luminosity and lightness to represent scenes and memories.

David is a Member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and also exhibits regularly with the Royal West of England Academy, Bristol, the Mall Galleries, London, at the Hawker Gallery in Amersham until Michael Hawker's retirement in 2016, and now with the Stour Gallery, Shipston-on-Stour, Cotswolds.
