Jane Perryman

Jane Perryman has for many years explored the vessel as an abstract form; developing into sculptural pieces alluding to the timeless vessel, while simultaneously reflecting the urban structures of buildings, walls and bridges.  The sculptural work explores tension and balance between pieces that can be repositioned into new arrangements and compositions.

Jane has recently created drawings/paintings which respond to the line, surface marks and textures of her ceramic forms.  The intention of presenting them together is to allow a relationship to be expanded between two and three dimensional objects.

Pieces are double walled and hollow using coiling, press moulding and slabbing techniques.  Clay is a mixture of porcelain and stoneware, the surfaces burnished and bisque fired, sanded and refined, followed by smoke firing in a sagger with various resists and combustibles.

Pieces are fired to 840 centigrade, then sanded and re-fired to 1050 centigrade.

Jane's work has won awardes including The Fletcher Challenge - New Zealand and World Ceramics Biennale - Korea.

Selected recent exhibitions include: Guest of Honour at the Biennial Exhibition of Ceramic ‘Terres d’Empreintes’ - Ceramique Internationale Contemporaire in Sevres • Paris,
Blas & Knada • Sweden, Kunstforum Solothurn • Switzerland, ‘Collect’, Victoria and Albert Museum • London, Keramiekcentrum Tiendschuur Tegelen • Netherlands, World Ceramic Biennale • Korea, Carlin Gallery • Paris, Kunstforum Solothurn • Switzerland.

1965 - 69 Hornsey College of Art - B.A Ceramics

1970 - 71 Cardiff University - Arts Teaching Certificate

This exhibition will be showing new sculptural pieces alongside earlier work, the forms inspired by Indian village smoke fired pottery on which Jane is an expert, having written a number of books on the subject, published by A&C Black.
