John Maxwell Steele
John says of his work, “The landscape is my subject, mostly places I know well and visit over and over again; certain areas of coast, moorland and fields. I aim to convey my feelings and a sense of the awareness of time passing. My paintings focus on territory that lies between the intensely
substantial and the dream state.”
This is achieved by an ability to use tonal colours with depth but a lightness of brush that creates a luminosity in even the darkest paintings. Sometimes colour and brush strokes are barely there but a painting will hold ones visual attention because of a perfectly placed fleck of colour or combination of forms.
