ABOVE Silver pendants

Karen Christie

“My jewellery usually takes the form of smooth pebble type hollow beads. I enjoy creating these shapes as they remind me of locked containers withholding a secret.

I try to hint at the interior space by adding decoration using a fine piercing saw. I use several different motifs; Windows, Lock and Key, Messages, Orchids and Bells.

Layered views are in evidence in my work; when designing and making jewellery, I am concerned with up to four layers: the surface, the interior, the background, and sometimes even the wearer (clothing or skin).”

Each piece of jewellery made by Karen Christie carries a small honeybee as a guarantee of originality. The bee symbol has proved so popular that an entire collection has been designed around it.
