Lavinia Gallie

Lavinia Gallie’s prints and paintings explore the ground which lies between the formal and the intuitive. A simple organizing structure, for instance a grid or geometric pattern, forms the basis onto which many layers of colour are then laid.  The need for balance and awareness of tonal subtleties, are as important as the element of chance, which is often such a necessary factor in leading to a resolution of the work.

The prints are made using a variety of techniques; they are relief-printed on an etching press, with lino, card or wood, and sometimes ‘found’ materials. Layers are built up, in a painterly fashion rather than in a graphic printmaking way, with traces of previous planes left visible to achieve greater depths of colour. Chine collee, a traditional Japanese method of collage, is often used.

The prints are unique (not in editions); however they are made in series, with motifs and visual ideas carried through.
