Maggie Shaw’s paintings are above all beautiful, reflecting her sense of being in the elemental world;
a tiny fragment of the universal. They are emotional representations of elusive moments, when the world we look at, just for that moment, stands still for us as it continually evolves.
The paintings are carefully though spontaneously made. Beginning with a super fine gesso surface, line, form, colour and tone are introduced, giving the work an energy and rhythm that captures the transient nature of the natural world.
“Whilst all around is turmoil, you somehow see and understand everything with a heightened clarity, and then a moment later, it is gone”
Originally a textile artist Maggie Shaw was a member of the Gloucestershire Guild of Craftsmen, exhibiting her contemporary textile work widely, including America, Japan, Germany and Spain. She currently teaches Textile Design, and divides her work between painting and teaching.
She was a finalist in the 2011 BBC TV programme ‘Show Me The Monet’. She has taken part in many solo and shared exhibitions her sketch books were selected for the Sketch Drawing Prize 2011.
“ When I work I aim to paint the fundamental bare bones of the atmosphere – how we feel it rather than how we see it – capturing the light and the air along with the structures beneath our feet, to evoke an emotional response, using the minimum of marks the minimum of colour in order to achieve this. I hope my work has that lasting quality that draws the viewer back to it again and again. In my recent work I try to capture those elusive moments we can all relate to, when the world, just for an instance stands still, frozen in that stillness. I want the results of my work to be paintings that are quietly absorbing.” Maggie Shaw
