Mary Burtenshaw

Mary Burtenshaw was born in London in 1972. She studied Fine Art at the Norwich School of Art & Design graduating with a BA (Hons) in 1994.

She currently combines her passion for painting with a career in publishing and has created and illustrated several children's books.

She has recently returned to her first love of pastel painting and creates evocative landscapes which are both strong and gentle at the same time.

She paints dramatic impressionist and abstract landscapes which are inspired by her love of the countryside and the many and varied places she has visited. She creates the atmosphere and feeling of a place with the use of texture and light.

Her medium is soft pastel on watercolour paper, giving intensity of colour and strong texture, but also the soft contours that suit the space and changing mood of her subject matter.

She has been greatly influenced by many different artists, including her grandfather, the landscape artist Geo Ray Burtenshaw.

This is the first time Mary has shown at The Stour Gallery
