Sarah Hitchens

Sarah’s work has a primitive quality about it, slab-built from coarse black clay; the forms are torn, textured, rough-edged and purposely imperfect. Often left unglazed or spontaneously bronzed to enhance the rawness of the surfaces.  Glazes when used are freely poured, splashed and slip-trailed; rips and tears become an essential part of the making process, revealing the life of the form and the journey it has been on in its creation.

Her work is to do with authenticity as opposed to perfection – what it is to be truly ourselves in this world without embellishment; stripped down to our core.  Intrigued by the unique ways we shape ourselves in response to life and fascinated by textural surfaces that reveal the passage of time. Also the unseen energy of relationships, the non-verbal communication which often conveys more than the verbal.  The physical placing of the work is very important to Sarah - in dynamic relationships- grouped together, set apart, leaning in...

She writes “I am intrigued by how it is possible to give power to objects - everyday objects both natural and man-made become talismans when invested with memories, yearnings, love and wonder. To me, being an artist means letting go of all the ‘shoulds’ and listening intently to myself and the world around me.  It’s about delighting in making and at the best of times, being in that space where I am no longer trying, but simply expressing.”
