The landscape of west Penwith has always been Simon's inspiration. His paintings are a combination of memory and sketches made en plein air, fusing abstraction and figurative elements of sea and landscapes to create paintings that are as enigmatic as they are alluring. His palette is often soft and gentle, and yet the paintings in this exhibition are expressive, graphic and sometimes startling in their energy.
Simon has exhibited with the gallery for many years, and it has been fascinating to watch his continual exploration and development of the elements of wildness and sometimes sheltered corners of Cornwall in his work.
Born in Macclesfield in Cheshire in1955, Simon Pooley trained as an architect in London, qualifying in1980. He practised in Sheffield for twelve years before moving, with his wife Hilary, to Cornwall in 1992 to paint full-time.
He works from a studio near Lamorna in Penwith just 8 miles from Lands End and shows in several galleries in the UK including London and several Cornish galleries. He has also shown abroad. He is a member of the Newlyn Society of Artists.
