Sven Berlin
Sculpt
or, Painter and Writer

The son of a Swedish timber merchant from South East London, Sven Berlin never went to art college.

Sven Berlin was one of the last surviving members of the “St. Ives School”, whose chief protagonists were Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson and Naum Gabo but his work avoided the academicism of both modern
and traditional practice. Visually, the strength of his work was based on confident, bold outlines, and went hand in hand with his work as a book illustrator to enable him to carve an authentic niche as one of the finest romantic draughtsmen of the period.

He died in 1999.

Denis Mitchell
1912 - 1993
Sculptor

From the late 1940’s, sculptor Denis Mitchell was central to the St. Ives modernist artists. Renowned for his polished , dynamic bronzes, he evolved a visual language that was inspired by his intimate knowledge of working in and on the landscape.

He was chief assistant to Barbara Hepworth between 1949 and 1959.He initially worked with wood, slate and stone, but eventually found his own forms in sand-cast bronze. His implicit understandingof the balance of line and form created by the interplay of light and surface imbues Mitchell’s tall abstractsculptures with a unique vitality.
