Teresa Lawton
Painter

Teresa Lawton was born in Poole, Dorset. She studied at Bournemouth College of Art and went on to receive a BA (Hons) degree in Fine Art at Winchester in 1994.

Teresa has lived and worked in Greece for several years and has travelled extensively through Argentina, South Africa, California, Europe and Ireland. She moved back to her native Dorset in 1982; painting is her full time occupation, she also lectures part time at Bournemouth Arts Institute.

After graduating, she took a studio in the workshops at Corfe Castle, alongside other local artists and craftsmen.

In this idyllic setting she set about establishing herself as a painter in the heart of the Isle of Purbeck, not surprisingly the area has inspired many acclaimed artists such as Augustus John, Paul Nash and Charles Rene Mackintosh to name but a few.

She now lives and works from her home, surrounded by nature reserve and farmland and within a stones throw from the beach, she can gather inspiration for her paintings. She spends a lot of time walking the coastline and has a keen interest in ancient sites in Dorset and Cornwall, which she visits often.

The industry around Poole’s working harbour is an endless source of information; man-made clutter creeps into her work, though it is always dominated by nature’s open spaces. The dense woodlands and thickets which follow the coastline and the vast open fields are the things she explores in her work; by simplifying form, space and colour, being less interested in representation she paints instinctively from a personal perspective.

Her work is not always a direct reaction to her surroundings, it is often influenced by memories of the past which are linked with the Dorset landscape which she has explored since childhood, making her feel deeply rooted to the area.

This, she feels is a key component in the way which her work develops, being a starting point from an emotional response to the connection she feels for Dorset and above all, nature itself.

“The chosen isolation of living in the midst of the coutryside means you have no choice but to respond to the harmony or chaos of nature. The weather, animals, sun, moon, sea and tides all start to affect you and you live alongside and move with it. Walking every day, I see things new and things past, things come and go, re-generate and replaced, repeated and return in an endless cycle. My work responds to these rhythms in nature and the delicate magic that surrounds it.”

Teresa’s work has been successfully exhibited since 1992. She was recently invited by Bournemouth University to exhibit with the ‘Arts Loan’ collection. Her paintings have received much interest in London and to a greater national audience as far a field as Scotland and Ireland. In 1977, her painting was selected by HRH the Prince of Wales for the ‘Discerning Eye Exhibition’.

Her work is in private collections owned by Ivor Novello, award winning singer/songwriter George Michael, Grammy award winner B A Robertson and award winning designer Dereck Birdsall.
